Quarter – “Periodontal Disease”
Periodontal disease, or simply gum disease,
is the most common cause of tooth loss in adults. This inflammatory
disease attacks the gums, bone, and other supporting structures
of the teeth.
The primary cause of periodontal
disease is irritants produced by a buildup of plaque and calculus
(tartar) around the teeth and under the gum line. Other factors
that may contribute to the advancement of periodontal disease are
the use of tobacco products, bruxism (grinding teeth), poor diet,
and some systemic diseases like diabetes, cirrhosis, and anemia.
Once diagnosed, treatment
may include scaling and rooting planning which involves the removal
of the plaque and calculus, curettage which removes inflamed tissue,
and possible surgery.
Probably the most important
treatment after initial control of the disease is more frequent
cleanings in conjunction with follow-up scaling with antibiotic
therapies.
With proper treatment
and thorough maintenance it is possible to keep your teeth a lifetime.
